Is your department or unit interested in systemically addressing inequity? In addition to offering general consulting services I have developed a set of interactive materials to support you in making productive changes. Below I describe a general audience talk and a workshop for departments. If you are interested in working with me reach out and we can discuss. These materials are adaptable for a wide range of audiences and needs.
Colloquium style talk: Dismantling inequity in physics: The essential role of overrepresented groups.
Inequity in physics remains a problem despite significant effort, care, and material resources dedicated to addressing it. The tendency to focus change efforts on those who have been historically and intentionally excluded while leaving those who occupy positions of power and privilege, and the structures they maintain, is likely related to the slow progress. In this talk, I present data from multiple studies considering how those who hold intersecting identities of privilege engage with equity efforts. Findings highlight how well-meaning people of privilege frequently undermine equity by failing to acknowledge even obvious inequity, distancing themselves from both the causes and solutions of inequity, minimizing it when they can not deny or distance, and justifying their own inaction. I end by offering recommendations for both individuals of privilege as well as recommendations for policymakers.
Workshop: Beyond Good Intentions: Strategies for Effective Equity Work
I developed up to 6 hours of workshop materials which can be adapted to shorted time frames. In the full version of the workshop we 1. Developing an understanding of why common equity approaches fail. 2. Engage with stories from excluded students to better understand the root causes of inequity. 3. Work to develop an action plan for the department based on what works. The workshop is designed for anyone who is interested in and committed to working for equity within a STEM department or unit. No previous knowledge is presumed. The workshop is to support those who are already committed to engaging in the work. All members and friends of the unit are welcome, this includes students, staff, faculty, administrators, etc. It is highly recommended that those who have decision making positions in the unit attend. Title and abstract below. I often deliver this workshop with my colleague Charles Henderson.
Below are some of the cool places where I have given this workshop. I would love to work with you too!
